Our City Guides Leeuwarden
Henk is the founder of A Guide to Leeuwarden. He has lived in Leeuwarden since 2001 and trained as a history teacher there. He then went on two round-the-world trips.
In 2013, he set up A Guide to Leeuwarden. Since 2016, he has also been working at the Fries Museum, the Fries Resistance Museum and the Princessehof Ceramics Museum. He has been a full-time guide since 2017. He gives guided tours in Dutch, English and German.
Henk has a bookcase bursting with books on Leeuwarden, loves delving into the archives in search of Art Nouveau architectural drawings, and has read almost everything about the Second World War in Leeuwarden. He also creates maps of Leeuwarden. And when Henk speaks, it seems as though everything comes from… Leeuwarden!
Christina grew up in a small town between Berlin and Hamburg and moved to Leeuwarden in 2011 to study. It didn’t take long before she fell in love with the city’s unique atmosphere and decided to make Leeuwarden her home.
Since 2016, she has been introducing visitors to her adopted hometown in German, Dutch and English. In addition to her work as a city guide, Christina works as a museum educator at the Fries Museum and the Ceramic Museum. She also translates exhibition texts for both museums and is immersed in art, culture and history on a daily basis.
Christina looks forward to sharing her enthusiasm for Leeuwarden and helping you discover the city’s special places and surprising stories.
Zenon grew up in Makkum, Friesland, and speaks fluent Frisian, Dutch and English. In 2011, he moved to Leeuwarden to study.
He has been part of A Guide to Leeuwarden since 2018 and has been working full-time as a guide and museum educator since 2021. As well as giving guided tours to visitors to Leeuwarden, he runs educational programmes at the Fries Museum, the Princessehof Ceramics Museum and the De Lawei Theatre. There, in addition to working with school pupils and students, he also works with specific target groups, such as international transition classes, special needs education and people with dementia.
With his infectious enthusiasm for history and culture, he draws everyone into his stories.
Leonie has lived in Leeuwarden since 2002 and knows the city like no other. She trained as a history teacher here and taught history in secondary schools for many years. She has been a city guide since 2022 and leads tours in both Dutch and English.
Her passion for history and storytelling goes even further. Leonie is also a guide at the Fries Museum, the Fries Resistance Museum and the Princessehof Ceramics Museum. She takes great pleasure in developing new educational materials for exhibitions there. She also runs projects on the Second World War in Friesland at primary schools.
As a reader, she moves effortlessly from history to philosophy, from fiction to psychology, and she also has a great love of music.
Kevin grew up in Friesland and has lived in Leeuwarden since 2006. He trained as an English teacher here. He has been a guide with A Guide to Leeuwarden since early 2017.
Being half English himself, he can give tours in Dutch, but he enjoys the English tours the most. Due to his background as an improvisational actor at the Leeuwarden Man met Snor he adds his theatrical flair to the tours by telling historical stories that capture the imagination.
Charlotte is born in Austria and moved to Leeuwarden to study Animal Management in 2010.
Besides her knowledge about animals and nature, she also knows her way around Leeuwarden. She is a guide at A Guide to Leeuwarden since the summer of 2015 and she is happy to show you Leeuwarden on the Leeuwarden Tour, the Street Art Tour or the Beer Tour. While German is her mother language, she can also show you around in English or Dutch. She’s also a guide in the Fries Museum.
Declan
He is half Canadian and grew up in Friesland. He speaks Frisian, Dutch and English fluently. He has lived in Leeuwarden since 2020, where he has studied to become a history teacher and followed a degree course in Environmental Management.
Since the summer of 2026, Declan has also been giving guided tours of Leeuwarden.
Kimberley
Kimberley has been living in Leeuwarden for almost 20 years. She ended up staying in this little town because of her studies and work.
As well as being a city guide, she also gives guided tours at the Fries Museum and the Ceramics Museum. She is also a singer and theatre producer.
She gives guided tours in English and Dutch, with the occasional bit of Leeuwarden slang thrown in – you can be sure of that!
Marcel
Became a guide at A Guide to Leeuwarden in the beginning of 2017. He is our only born and raised Leeuwarder. He moved to Groningen and Barcalona to study Roman Languages and Culture. And later also got his degree in English. Since the end of 2016 he returned to his old hometown. Besides being a guide he works as a Spanish and English teacher. Although officially retired now, you can always ask him for a Spanish walking tour
